Students With Disabilities

One of the three main populations NEi helps with employment rehabilitation is students with disabilities. Our transition timeline for aiding these students is as follows:

The Introduction Phase – ages 12 to 14

In this first stage, students connect with mentors and incorporate vocational goals in both IEP and in school. They also contact DVR and the PreETS program while learning to understand their strengths and weaknesses in learning and soft-skill development. Students will establish a transdisciplinary team at school, understand both assistive technology and accommodation needs, and learn how to talk about their disability and functional limitations.

The Exploration Phase – ages 14 to 16

This stage includes first jobs. Students will explore their options through shadowing or community-based training and Career Exploration testing. They will also obtain ID and transportation cards, develop mobility and community awareness, and build their resumes. Students are proficient in ADLs and IADLs..

The Identification Phase – ages 16 to 17

During this third phase, students apply for higher education, vocational training, or apprenticeship. They should be able to hold a job and develop a work history. By age 17, they should begin discussing guardianship/ conservatorship.

The Final Phase – ages 18 to 21

The last phase of employment rehabilitation for students with disabilities covers education, employment, training, and community living. Applications for social security, SSDI, Medicaid, and other benefits should be submitted. Other necessary services, such as housing, health insurance, and voter registration should also be identified.
